But after tomorrow, he can finally sit back and watch his nephews do the work. Mr Langley, 69, will retire this weekend after 37 years as Ballarat’s number one man for sound.
After a career that has seen Mr Langley become somewhat of an icon at Ballarat’s biggest events, he says it is finally time to hang up the speakers and sit back and focus on his other passion – restoring old motorbikes.
The veteran sound technician will hand the business to his nephews Noel Bauer and Dale Johns, although it will remain known as George Langley’s Sound.
Mr Langley bought the business in 1975, about 40 years since it had been established as Warne Wilson Amplifiers.
For decades, Mr Langley has been responsible for the sound at most of Ballarat’s biggest events. He was responsible for the sound for the visit of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II and every prime ministers’ visits.
“In a way the job controlled my lifestyle, whether that is a good or bad thing,” said Mr Langley.
“It’s a bit of a relief that I’m finally wrapping it up though.”
