The Bryce Stanaway-trained mare bolted to an emphatic 12-length win in the SITA Tour of Victoria Country Showcase 0 – 62 Handicap, 2200m, and will now be targeted at the New Year’s Day feature at Flemington.
Warwarick, a six-year-old by High Chaparral, has now won three of her eight starts for Stanaway, who got the horse from Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams.
“They reckoned she had crook knees and joints, but there was actually nothing wrong with those. It was in her feet – her feet were rotten,” Stanaway, from Torquay, said.
“As soon as I got her I picked it up because I am a farrier by trade from New Zealand. I’ve got her feet right and there is actually nothing wrong with her legs.”
Warwarick, ridden by Kiwi jockey Cory Parish, will have just over a week to freshen-up before the listed Bagot over 2800m.
“If you looked at the fields (on Saturday), and what’s going around at the moment, I can’t see the Bagot being an overly strong race unless they all come out of the woodwork,” Stanaway said.
