The New South Wales 15-year-old stunned her rivals and surprised herself by claiming the Priceline women’s 100m title.
Angell shrugged off a tightening in her handicap between heat and final to out-gun Tarryn Fisher (10.75m) and Karlee Bailey (7m) in the final in 12.774 seconds.
She incorrectly started off six metres in winning her heat, but having the mark amended to 5 metres never looked like stopping her.
Bailey also had to cope with a handicap change – from the 10.5m, where she won a heat, to 7m – and put in a big effort to fill a top three spot.
From Terrigal on the NSW central coast, Angell and her family took advantage of visiting friends at Somerville on the Mornington Peninsula to make the trip to Shepherd’s Flat for the youngster’s Victorian Athletic League debut.
Angell plans to run in Stawell at Easter and saw the Daylesford Gift meet as an opportunity to get a taste of the Victorian scene in just her second season on the professional circuit.
The wins continues a promising start to Angell’s tilt at professional running, with the 2012 Australian junior track and field championships competitor having reached the prestigious Queanbeyan Women’s Gift final in November.
KARLEE Bailey, of Pakenham, went on to taste success in the under-18 girls’ 100m.
She caught Ballarat’s Holly Dobbyn right on the line.
