The decision to cease publication of the Ballarat News follows continuing consumer trends towards sourcing news and information from online and mobile media platforms.
The Ballarat News was originally established as an independent weekly newspaper before being purchased by The Courier.
Both publications are now owned by Fairfax Regional Media.
Ballarat News general manager Brett Macdonald said the final edition of the publication would celebrate its history going back to the first edition in October 1973.
“Readers and advertisers have been very loyal to the News over the years and we understand many will be disappointed by this decision,” Mr Macdonald said.
“These are challenging and changing times in the media industry and decisions such as this are not taken lightly.
“We are in the process of determining how we can provide content and advertising opportunities for those associated with the News through our parent brand The Courier.”
Mr Macdonald said the decision was not a reflection on the position of The Courier.
“We have more readers than ever before across The Courier’s print, online and smartphone platforms and while we are saddened to see the final edition of the News, we remain extremely positive about future growth.”
