The historic building built in 1901 has been transformed into boutique apartments including 10 suites, either one, two or three bedroom, plus a conference room, serviced laundry and upstairs and downstairs foyers.
Developers Darren and Janet Fraser have tried to keep as much of the historic building as possible, with leadlight windows either restored or replaced.
The original fittings have been retained, including the name of the first owner Dr Cussen etched over the front door, marble and cast-iron fireplaces that were boarded up have been renovated and 21 Italian-made chandeliers installed.
All verandahs have been restored and the building’s exterior and cast-iron balcony painted.
Mr Fraser said he was thrilled by the outcome.
“We love it. It’s really exceeded our expectations,” Mr Fraser said.
“We’re really happy with how it’s turned out. It all flowed really well.”
The apartments were last night opened for public viewing, with Ballarat MP Catherine King, mayor John Burt and 20 RSL committee members all getting their first glimpse of the new-look building.
