A team of 12 will be selected from the 22-person squad, after camps that begin in March, and will fly to Lithuania to compete in July with further international competition opportunities.
The 17-year-old will also fly to Launceston on Saturday, playing in the under-20 Victorian women’s team in the under-20 basketball nationals.
“I’ll fly down on Saturday morning before the tournament starts on Sunday,” she said.
“I’m pretty excited.
“I’m used to playing for Victorian country teams, but this is country and metro combined.”
Wehrung will be one of the youngest players on the team.
“It will be pretty tough though, but if I can play really well I’ll be able to prove to the other coaches and myself how much I’ve improved.”
Wehrung said the national tournament would also prepare her for the under-19 squad.
“I’m bottom age for that as well, so it is going to be tough,” she said.
“I’m not too sure where I stand, so I’m just going to give it my best and see how I go.”
Wehrung moved to Canberra at the start of last year to study at the Australian Institute of Sport, where she is now a year 12 student, after attending Ballarat Clarendon College.
“I always miss home, but it’s going really well for me up here,” she said.
But with the end of school fast approaching, Wehrung is not sure what next year brings.
“It all depends on what opportunities come along, and I’m always happy to see those new opportunities.”
