At least that was the version told by storytellers Hertle and Bertle in the The Miss Muffet Show at Ballarat Town Hall on Saturday.
The characters of Hertle and Bertle, played by Tim Denton and Annie Forbes, of About Face Productions, arrived in town with a giant pop-up storybook for Ballarat Heritage Weekened.
The theme of this year’s Ballarat Heritage Weekend, ‘Stories of Entertainment’, gave visitors the opportunity reminisce about the theatre, film, radio, music and storytelling of old.
Ms Forbes said storytelling was central to Australia’s heritage, because it was how history and knowledge was passed down.
“Hertle and Bertle are from a bygone era, they’re from once upon a time,” she said.
“We’re getting children to think about all those nursery rhymes and stories and look at them in a humorous way.”
She said in childhood, a pop-up book was the first step in a story coming alive.
