Byrnes will line up for the men's singles and doubles finals in pursuit of glory on Sunday in the Ballarat Open Gold AMT.
Old college buddy Rameez Junaid awaits him in the men's final first-up at Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre.
"As far as tomorrow's (singles) final goes, I know (opponent) Rameez Junaid really well. We were in college together, so I've known him for awhile," Byrnes said.
"He's a nice guy. I've seen him around a bit so I kinda know his game."
Byrnes, the number four seed, was tested in his singles' semi-final by number five seed Daniel Nolan ,6-2 7-5, on Saturday morning.
Then came an epic battle with Frenchman Vincent Stouff, 6-7 7-6 6-2.
Stouff had match point in the second set before Byrnes won in a tie-break.
Byrnes, 29, is back in Australia coaching at Melbourne Park after six years at Oklahoma State University in the United States.
This is his first visit to Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre and he said it was a good place with good competition to launch his summer campaign.
Meanwhile, Ballarat teenager Zoe Hives bowed out in the semi-finals to number 2 seed Viktorija Rajicic, 6-4 6-4.
Rajicic will face reigning Wimbledon women's doubles champion Su-Wei Hsieh (Chinese Taipei) in Sunday morning's women's final.
Hives and Bacchus Marsh partner Sophie Torcello will face Rajicic and her sister Monika in the women's doubles final in the afternoon.
