Ballarat police have charged a man over the alleged attempting stabbing in Peel Street yesterday evening.
The 21-year-old Ballarat man was arrested about 7pm last night after he was located hiding in a residential backyard near Doveton Street.
Earlier, police allege he tried to stab a Melbourne man who had gotten out of his car about 5.45pm.
After a brief manhunt, he was arrested by police.
He has been remanded overnight and is expected to appear in Ballarat Magistrates Court today.
FIRE
Rain does not always help firefighters, in fact it was the complete opposite last night.
Even though there was just a small amount of rain, it was enough to spark three separate power pole fires in Ballarat, causing blackouts across the city.
Firefighters say it is not uncommon for power poles to catch fire after an extended dry period, with small amounts of rain often worse than heavy downpours.
Crews doused blazes at the corner of Mair and Lydiard streets about 4am, having already tackled power pole fires in Sutton Street (10pm) and Simpson Street (9.52pm).
More than 300 homes still remain without power in Ballarat, with Powercor crews hoping to fix the problem by 11am.
A number of fire trucks were also deployed to assist in a reported crash that turned out to be a hoax call near Barkly Street last night, about 10pm.
Add those calls to a false alarm at the Mars factory on Ring Road and it made for one hectic night shift.
WEATHER
We were ready for the storm yesterday and, well, it never arrived.
At least not in Ballarat.
While Geelong received 54mm of rain, including a whopping 35mm in half an hour, we were almost bone-dry in Ballarat.
Just 4.2mm fell for the day, with almost half of that falling between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.
Although the weather may look threatening at times today, there is very little chance of rain today either.
A top temperature of 17 degrees is forecast - hardly what you would expect in February given the hot summer we've had.
Tomorrow will reach 18 degrees, before the temperature returns to mid-20s over the weekend and into next week.
TRAINS
Ballarat trains are running on time this morning, according to the V/Line website, although the station has also fallen victim to the power outage.
