“We’re overwhelmed by what’s happened,” they said.
“We can’t believe the generosity of the community.”
The couple, who lost their daughter Sharon Siermans last year, are the grandparents and now carers of Sharon’s son, Aron Siermans.
Saturday night’s cocktail fundraiser’s proceeds will help John and Denise with the upbringing of their grandson.
Event organiser and friend Matthew Tol visited the Siermans yesterday to tell them how the fundraiser went.
“They broke down into tears when I told them that $82,000 had been raised,” Mr Tol said.
“They just couldn’t believe it.
“And they’re continuing to receive support from people they don’t even know, who are dropping off cheques.”
John and Denise particularly thank the organising committee, including Richard and Lisa Hayden, David and Jenny Haymes, Victoria Armstrong, Andrew Rowan and Belinda Walton.
“We have been so touched,” they said.
