In December, Valmai Heap, who dedicated her life to helping the community, particularly in Ballarat and surrounding areas, was added to the roll.
The roll was presented to the community at a special event yesterday with Valmai’s daughter Karen Heap on hand for the presentation.
Ms Heap said she was surprised when she found out her mother would be added to the roll and urged others to consider possible nominees who should also be added.
“It is not just about getting your name in a book, it is about what you have done in the community and how things were made better,” she said.
“I think it should be looked at as an encouragement and a role model type thing and it gives something for young people to strive for.”
Ms Heap said it was important to think broadly when nominating.
Aboriginal Affairs Minister Tim Bull is travelling with the honour roll, which will visit other regional cities such as Bendigo, Morwell and Echuca as part of a road show.
“Obviously the road show is a significant recognition of the contribution a number of Aboriginal people have made to society in Victoria across a whole spectrum of areas,” Mr Bull said.
The closing date for 2014 nominations for the honour roll is May 23.
