WHEN Laura Burzacott first read the script for Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls, she knew it was a story worth telling.

"I love Australian stories. That's basically why I'm an actor," the former Ballarat resident said.

"Telling Australian stories is really important to me and when I read the script, even though it's set in the 1960s, it really appealed to me.

"It's about women and isolation and outback Australia. I think we get bombarded with so much American television and movies when there's some really great stories here in our backyard."

Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two women of wildly different temperaments, united in their abandonment by the men in their lives and their passion for all things country and all things American.

Set in a small country town in Queensland, the play follows the unlikely friendship of Vicki and Rae and their loves, heartbreaks, divorces and births over three years.

Burzacott, who plays the role of Vicki, said she noticed several similarities between herself and her character.

"When I first read the script I thought it might be a complete stretch but when I got into character, I knew there were some things I could relate to," she said.

A celebration of friendship and ultimately liberation, Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls marks the first drama with comedy and music for Her Majesty's 2014 Theatre Season. Burzacott said there were many elements of the play which audiences would enjoy.

"I think everyone loves the country music side. They love tapping their toes to that," she said.

"I also think they enjoy witnessing the bond between two girls who start their relationship as complete opposites and end up going through some really similar things."
