Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said Victoria had experienced a heatwave and fast-moving grass fires threatening Melbourne’s fringe during the summer period.
“The risk of bushfire in regional and outer metropolitan communities is a very difficult reality for communities and firefighters working hard to protect those communities,” he said.
“It has been a long and challenging time for the emergency services and the Victorian communities and their efforts in preparing for and responding to the threat of fire should be recognised.”
In January, the first official recommendation to evacuate in Victoria was issued for Halls Gap as fires ravaged the area.
The Hazlewood mine fire was also a big challenge for firefighters, with 7000 of them called into battle the blaze which lasted 45 days before being declared safe.
Interstate and international crews were also on hand throughout the season to help Victoria battle through the dangerous period.
