Parents of three, Cameron and Rachael Macdonald were hopeful funding would be announced in Tuesday’s budget for a proposed primary school in Lucas, where the couple will move their family in September. 

“There’s not really much in it for Ballarat,” Ms Macdonald said.

“We are feeling a bit let down because of expectations there would be funding for  a primary school in Lucas.”

Ms Macdonald said demand was high for a primary school in the new suburb because Alfredton Primary School was close to capacity. Her children would continue to attend Macarthur Street Primary after the move.

Education Minister Martin Dixon visited the city on Monday to announce a $7.8 million boost to Ballarat High School in the state budget.

Although a new primary school has been earmarked for Lucas, Mr Dixon would not confirm if the site would figure in Tuesday’s budget announcements.

However, the pair welcomed funding to modernise Ballarat High School, which will most likely serve their young children in the future.

“We are pleased Ballarat High had $8 million funding because it’s definitely needed,” Ms Macdonald said.

“It’s become a government policy for kids to stay in school longer and participate, and Ballarat High School is in one of the fastest growing areas in Victoria, near Alfredton and Lucas.”

The parents said $8.4 million for a new police station in Lucas was necessary to support the boom in population.

“We are happy that the funding has included a police station in Lucas but other services are necessary, considering it is a growth area,” Ms Macdonald said.
