Crime prevention officer Leading Senior Constable Donna Parsons said thefts of tools and diesel from tradies’ utes and from construction sites had been occurring around Ballarat.
“Where thefts from motor cars have been occurring at private homes, thieves have not been stopping at the front gate,” she said.
“Residents and in particular tradies need to be aware of this and to ensure that they do not leave tools and equipment in locations that are easily accessible or isolated.”
Leading Senior Constable Parsons said the thefts were occurring at construction sites across the region.
On Thursday, she met with tradespeople in Lucas to discuss concerns about working on construction sites.
She warned tradespeople not to leave tools on construction sites overnight and to make sure vehicles were secured.
“People need to be aware of their safety. We need to get the message out there to prevent people from being a victim,” Leading Senior Constable Parsons said.
“Police are urging the public to be vigilant with their security and to lock vehicles, remove items that may draw interest from the opportunistic thief. Respond to the dog barking, consider sensor lighting – most of all, don’t be complacent.”
