Northern claimed the overall L & J Clifton Shield with a score of 126 points, holding the defending champion off in a tight finish on carpeted greens at the Ken Kay Badminton Stadium on Monday.
The new championship district scored the most points in the ladies’ singles, pairs and fours and in men’s fours and mixed pairs events.
Ballarat still had several successful results to be second with 122 points, with Gold’s men’s and ladies’ triples and mixed fours taking out top honours.
Elaine Pitts, Brenda Hughes and Heather Hopkinson went undefeated in the ladies’ triples, as did Lauris Franks, Sheryl Darken, John Wakeling and John Redfern in the mixed fours, winning nine straight matches.
Jacob Croft, Rob Ohlsen and David Speechley had a tougher time of it in the men’s triples, winning by percentage only.
Defending champions Julie Nimmo and Norma Betteridge were second in the women’s pairs.
