Nicole Warren had returned home to discover her seven-year-old cat Misty lying bloodied on the floor of her shed about 1pm.
Ms Warren said two jack russell terriers had made their way into her backyard shed before attacking her pet.
“It is just not right,” Ms Warren said. “My beautiful little cat was left panting and bleeding, half dead, on the ground.”
Misty was treated for injuries caused by puncture bites to his body, tongue, ears and teeth, at a Ballarat veterinary clinic on Thursday night.
Ms Warren said there was a chance Misty could lose his tail.
“The dogs basically pulled on either side of him, like tug-o-war,” she said.
The animal lover said this was not the first instance of the dogs entering her property.
“They would be here about a dozen times a month, or more,” Ms Warren said. “I have herded them away a number of times.”
Ms Warren, who was also injured in the scuffle, said she was yet to contact the owner of the dogs.
“I don’t want to ruffle any feathers in the community,” she said. “I will contact the owner on some level, at some point.”
Ms Warren now has to foot a $1500 vet bill and install additional fencing around her house to protect her cats.
Hepburn Shire Council was notified of the incident on Thursday and said it had been in contact with the owner of the dogs.
