Ballarat City Council chief executive officer Anthony Schinck said at Wednesday’s night meeting the signs promoting the candidacy of Wendouree and Buninyong candidates Craig Coltman and Ben Taylor needed to have proper planning permits within 21 days or be removed.
“We are treating them as consistent with other complaints,” Mr Schinck said in response to a question from ratepayer Gary Fitzgerald.
“The signs do need to have a planning permit.”
In response to a second question from Mr Fitzgerald about whether the planning permit would be discussed in the council chamber, Mr Schinck said it would depend on the usual triggers needed to bring a matter before the councillors, including any objections.
Mr Fitzgerald said he believed the signage, on the corner of Mair and Humffray streets, did not comply with the Ballarat Planning Scheme and Ballarat Advertising Guidelines.
Councillor Vicki Coltman, who is Mr Coltman’s wife, left the chamber while the issue was being discussed. “I had nothing to do with it but some people may perceive that I have,” Cr Coltman said.
