Commonwealth Games: 'Team Ballarat' overnight - day 3

MATTHEW Flapper is one win away from playing off for a gold medal in the lawn bowls men's triples tournament at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Flapper,  Nathan Rice and Wayne Ruediger play South Africa in a semi-final on Sunday at 5.45pm (AEST).

The Australians progressed with a tense 16-13 win over Jersey in a quarter final in the early hours of Sunday (AEST).

Another former Ballarat player Brett Wilkie was not so fortunate in the pairs.

Wilikie and Aaron Sherriff suffered their first loss of the Games in a knockout quarter final.

They lost to Namibia 19-12.

Wilkie will now look for redemption in the fours, while Sherriff will turn his attention to the singles.

It was testing day from the outset for Flapper, Rice and Ruediger.

They rounded out their sectional play with a 17-15 win over Malaysia.

It was nip and tuck all the way, with Australia winning 10 ends and Malaysia eight.

While Flapper was never headed, the Australians were unable to relax.

They led by six shots after eight ends, but with four end to play they led by just the one, 13-12.

Again in the quarter final, Australia held sway against Jersey for most of the match, coming from 3-1 down after three ends to lead 12-7 after 11.

Jersey hit back immediately with three shots, but no team was able to get more than one shot over the next three ends.

Two shots on the 16th gave Flapper the break he was looking for to set up victory.

Wilkie and Sherriff had a disastrous start to the pairs quarter final and never recovered.

Namibia led 15-0 after eight ends.

The Australians clawed their way  to 16-9 after 13, but the task was always going to be took big.

AUSTRALIA is out of the mixed teams badminton tournament, losing a quarter final to Singapore 3-0.

Ballarat's Jeff Tho lost his singles match to David Wong in 21-7 21-13 in 25 minutes.

Tho now has a few days off before playing in the opening round of the men's singles on Tuesday.

He meets Joseph Githitu from Kenya in the round of 64.
