We're a little behind here in Kentucky, after heavy rains swamped Valhalla and halted action for one hour and 51 minutes today. We'll be looking at a late finish, and could even run into Monday (US time) if a playoff is necessary.
Jason Day has just teed off with a cracker.
We are minutes away from McIlroy and Wiesberger teeing off their final round, with the Northern Irishman one shot clear going into the last round. Can McIlroy hold on for a hard-earned win? The 28 year old Austrian has played five previous majors and missed the cut in four - could this be his breakthrough event?
Ernie Els just hit a sweet tee shot on the eighth - it lands six foot short but gets the crowd's approval. The South African has made up some serious ground today, but still sits in the background.
McIlroy tees off, and leaves the fairway to the left hand side. Weisberger's drive is truer, but about ten yards shorter. Elsewhere, Mickelson birdies with a 30-foot crowd-pleaser to move to -11 while Rickie Fowler pars.
Jason Day is on the second, and hits a glorious drive down the fairway. He's still in it folks. He needs one helluva round though.
-13: McIlroy
-12: Wiesberger
-11: Mickelson, Fowler
-10: Palmer, Stenson, Ilonen, Day
McIlroy and Weisberger make par as neither manages to sink speculative putts.
Day pars the second, as Oosthuizen birdies to join the Aussie on 10 under.
One of these days the ball will go "in the hole" - but do you think that will shut them up.......? #wishfulthinking #USPGA — Jane Lewis (@BBCJaneLewis) August 10, 2014
Jason Day with a beauty off the tee on the third hole. He irons it about ten short, drops dead. He is showing no signs of letting up on the leaders. Compatriot Adam Scott is dropping down the leaderboard after bogeying to send his card six under.
Nightmare for Rickie Fowler, who lands in the water on the second at Floyd’s Fork. He'll have to be perfect to birdie this one after the penalty.
Back at the top, McIlroy drives long on the second, while Wiesberger finds a clean bunker.
Mickelson leapfrogs Fowler as Jason Day pars on the third with a very bad missed putt. That could hurt him.
Mickelson misses an unbelievable birdie by 18 inches on the second hole. Fowler almost hits a miracle shot, but will be happy to bogey after that water hazard.
#Mickelson has that look in his eye, but #Mcilroy has started pretty solid... I'd be amazed if it wasn't one these two who win!! #USPGA — Craig Sargent (@sarginho) August 10, 2014
if Rory McIlroy holds all these guys off today, it would be the best win of the 4 Majors he'll have won #USPGA — Alex Rousseau (@RousseauAl) August 10, 2014
As it stands:
-13: McIlroy
-12: Mickelson, Wiesberger
-11: Stenson, Ilonen, Fowler
-10: Els, Palmer, Day, Oosthuizen
And it's not going to script for Jason Day, who makes par for the fourth consecutive hole, and drops down to eighth on the leaderboard on -10. With contrasting fortunes, Ernie Els just had the crowd on its feet with a huge putt for a birdie which takes him to fourth.
Phil Mickelson joins a three-way tie for first on -12 after a wonderful beginning to the day. This is some leading pack folks. Strap yourselves in.
The way this is going, it'll be a 5-way tiebreaker #USPGA — Andre Cavanagh (@andrecavanagh) August 10, 2014
And there it is! We now have a five-way tie at the top:
Rory McIlroy -12
Phil Mickelson -12
Bernd Wiesberger -12
Henrik Stenson -12
Rickie Fowler -12
Phil Mickleson never really regained the form we saw during that episode of Entourage. #USPGA — Jack (@Headcuts) August 10, 2014
That's better from Day, who birdies to go to join Ernie Els on -11. He's right back there. Els falls short with a long putt and won't join the leaders just yet.
Yeasss Jason no where near out of this #uspga — Jack Crawford (@JackDFC) August 10, 2014
Golf is as tight as I have ever seen a major!! Very Early days yet but all signs point to a play off unless someone takes control #USPGA — Jono Butler (@JonoButler1) August 10, 2014
Wiesberger makes par on the fourth - just. He is staying very steady this morning, not dropping at all. McIlroy fluffs his first putt, but makes the second - he looks like he is starting to feel the pinch. He has shown he can handle these big rounds before, but he is not at all comfortable out there at the moment.
#USPGA On a serious note, good to hear Phil shouting fore there... Far too many of these guys not doing that anymore #GentlemanPhil #TopMan — paul reid (@bigreido2210) August 10, 2014
Phil Mickelson just showed every ounce of his experience with a wonderful save from the rough on the fifth. He stays on -12.
Rickie Fowler takes the outright lead! Unbelievable! He moves to -13 as Jason Day roars back into the frame with a killer birdie on five.
-13 Rickie Fowler
-12 Rory McIlroy
-12 Bernd Weisberger
-12 Phil Mickelson
-12 Henrik Stenson
-11 Jason Day
-11 Ernie Els
This is bloody fantastic!!!! #USPGA I'm wearing orange, but i'm still Northern Irish #Fowler #McIlroy Playoff between them please #WinWin — Nathan Boyle (@17_Hammie_LUFC) August 10, 2014
Els stays on -11 after shaving a birdie to the right of the hole by an inch. Rory McIlroy looks like he is going to par again - he hasn't really got going this morning, and it could prove costly for the favorite.
Not a good start for @McIlroyRory but come on have faith in ya to turn it around!! Lets go rory!!! Bring it home for NI. #USPGA #2014 — Sarah Wilson (@sazwilsy7) August 10, 2014
Victor Dubuisson chips in for a marvellous eagle on the tenth hole! Lovely stuff to move the Frenchman onto -9.
- 13 Rickie Fowler
-12 Rory McIlroy
-12 Bernd Weisberger
-12 Phil Mickelson
-12 Henrik Stenson
-11 Jason Day
-11 Ernie Els
Rory McIlroy is +1 for the round - the only player in that top seven to be over today. Henrik Stenson is three under, as he continues to climb slightly off the radar. Jason Day is on the fifth hole, shooting one under. Gripping stuff.
After that resurgence, Jason Day undoes the hard work with another badly missed putt. He slips to -10 on a very wobbly round. That puts him back in eighth, depite only being two shots off six of the top seven.
If USPGA doesn't get finished today it will be Jason Day's fault. So slow - he's holding the whole field up. — Adam Uttley (@Smutters) August 10, 2014
We currently have three groups choking up the sixth hole. Painful.
Fowler arrows a long iron on six, and it draws right. Mickelson follows suit and both will have a tough second shot to stay on track.
- 13 Rickie Fowler
-12 Rory McIlroy
-12 Bernd Weisberger
-12 Phil Mickelson
-12 Henrik Stenson
-11 Jason Day
-11 Ernie Els
Henrik Stenson misses an eagle putt for the outright lead, but could birdie and join Fowler in the lead.
Mickelson and Fowler both par on the sixth, and that keeps the leaderboard fixed.
Micklesons short game is an absolute joke! Mans a wizard!! #USPGA — Ben Halliday (@benhallidayCUFC) August 10, 2014
Henrik Stenson birdies the seventh, and moves to 13 under to join Rickie Fowler in joint lead! He is crushing it after seven holes of the final round. What a talent - can the Swede finally take out a big one?null
McIlroy lines up a bunker shot on the sixth, and spins the ball onto the green. He is hanging in there.
The pace of this final round is painful, once did the Old Course Minchinhampton in 2 & 3/4 hours inc hole in one 16th #USPGA — steve griffin (@stevegriffin1) August 10, 2014
- 13: Stenson (7th hole), Fowler (6)
- 12: Mickelson (6), McIlroy (5), Wiesberger (5)
- 11: Els (15), Ilonen (7)
-10 Day (7)
McIlroy drops another on the sixth hole from about four feet. That's a shocker! He is +2 for the round, and two shots off the lead now at -11.
Weisberger bogeys on the sixth with a badly missed putt, and drops off the pace to 11 under. At the moment, this looks like Stenson, Fowler or Mickelson for the purse, with the southpaw looking golden.
-13: Stenson (8), Fowler (6)
-12: Mickelson (6)
-11: Els (15), Ilonen (8), McIlroy (6), Wiesberger (6)
Phil Mickelson misses an eagle putt on the seventh by a whisker, which would have given him the outright lead. He settles for the birdie, and joins the outright leaders on 13 under. The crowd loved that.
All these years and tournaments later, and Americans still think shouting "GET IN THE HOLE!!!" is clever. Grinds my gears. #USPGA — Vincent Bradley (@VincentBradley) August 10, 2014
And Rickie Fowler goes outright again with a solid putt for his 70th birdie of the season! He is -3 for the day, -14 overall.
Rickie Fowler -14
Phil Mickelson -13
Henrik Stenson -13
Rory McIlroy -11
Ernie Els - 11
Mikkko Illonen - 11
Bernd Weisberger -11
Tied 8th: Jason Day - 10
Tied 16th: Adam Scott - 8
Ouch. Mickelson rolls into the bunker off the tee on the seventh. It's not a killer, but it'll be tough.
And Rory McIlroy hits a masterful chip out of the bunker on the seventh and could birdie to get back in it at -13.
It'll take some unbelievable golf from Rory to catch up the leaders, but if anyone can do that, it's him #USPGA — Ben Woodall (@woodall85) August 10, 2014
Mickelson lofts it out of the bunker on the seventh, and should stay on the pace.
McIlroy putts easily on the seventh, and climbs back to 12 under with a birdie as Rickie Fowler overhits a putt to miss out on the outright lead.
So, at the moment, we have Stenson and Fowler leading the board, with the pack slightly breaking up:
-14 Rickie Fowler (8th hole)
-14 Henrik Stenson (9)
-13 Phil Mickelson (8)
-12 Rory McIlroy (7)
-11 Mikko Ilonen (9)
-11 Bernd Weisberger (7)
-10 Ernie Els (17)
-10 Jason Day (7)
McIlroy sinks his birdie putt, and sits on -12 now, two behind Stenson and Fowler. Wiesberger pars on the seventh, but he is looking dead and buried after an ordinary few holes.
Fowler and Mickelson go straight up the fairway on the ninth as Els makes birdie to sign for 65 and is the current clubhouse leader at -11!
Rory McIlroy is warming up on the ninth, waiting for the course to clear ahead. He is hanging in there, but needs to make up two shots.
Fowler and Stenson miss opportunities to go into the outright lead, as both edge their long putts and should stay level, barring disaster. Phil Mickelson birdies the ninth to draw level with the pair at the top!
-14 Rickie Fowler
-14 Henrik Stenson
-14 Phil Mickelson
-12 Rory McIlroy
-12 Mikko Illonen
-11 Ernie Els
-11 Jimmy Walker
-11 Ryan Palmer
-10 Jason Day
Fowler with a fist bump for Phil after Phil ties him. Nice. And it's on. #PGA — SteveK (@stephenkruiser) August 10, 2014
On the ninth, both McIlroy and Wiesberger miss the carpet and go rough. They'll do well to par here.
Mickelson also gives himself a headache on the 10th, but saves it deliciously on the par 5 hole. One up, Stenson could birdie uphill for the outright lead here ... buuut he's blown it. We stay level.
On the tenth, Mickelson and Fowler are on the green, with mid-length putts to birdie.
-14 Rickie Fowler
-14 Henrik Stenson
-14 Phil Mickelson
-12 Rory McIlroy
-12 Mikko Illonen
-11 Ernie Els
-11 Bernd Weisberger
-10 Jason Day
That's a beauty from Fowler, who sinks it to go 15 under and take the outright lead! What a round so far from the youngster. Mickelson next up to tie back. It's more straightforward than his partner's, but he misses left, and sticks on -14, one behind.
-15 Rickie Fowler
-14 Henrik Stenson
-14 Phil Mickelson
-12 Rory McIlroy
-12 Mikko Illonen
-11 Ernie Els
-11 Bernd Weisberger
-10 Jason Day
If y'all arnt watching this PGA championship right now you are missing out! @McIlroyRory just hit THE SHOT! — Alexander Steven (@amosiniak) August 10, 2014
WOW! Rory McIlroy sets himself up for a shot at the eagle on the tenth with an unbelievable second hit that looked as if it might sneak all the way to the flag. That could be a game-changer.
The fact that I literally can't leave my apartment cause I'm glued to this PGA championship is kinda scaring me.. — Chris Carrasquillo (@seeetrace) August 10, 2014
He's back in it! Rory McIlroy eagles the tenth to move to 14 under and go one off the lead for the first time in forever.
Stenson putts tidily for par as Phil Mickelson sinks one to momentarily move to -15 and tie with Fowler who is yet to putt.
I didnt even used to hit them shots on tiger woods pga tour! — JamesRumsby (@JimmyR95) August 10, 2014
-15 Rickie Fowler
-15 Phil Mickelson
-14 Henrik Stenson
-14 Rory McIlroy
-11 Ernie Els
-11 Bernd Weisberger
-11 Jimmy Walker
-10 Jason Day
The only knock to this PGA Championship will be it ending for the night with the last three groups on the course. #PleaseHurry #OnTheClock — Andy Garman (@GarmanSports) August 10, 2014
So, folks, we've got an epic in the making here, as we go into the back nine proper with four still in the hunt. All eyes are on the Mickelson/Fowler pairing, but McIlroy is starting to get into fifth gear, and Stenson just isn't letting up.
This PGA is why I think the US Open is the 4th best major ... The PGA gets it that we want to watch great players hit great shots #PGAChamp — Dan Kinsella (@Dan_Kinsella) August 10, 2014
McIlroy misses a chance to tie the lead, but he is really starting to cook with gas out there.
Regardless of what happens, this has been the most exciting Sunday of a major we've had in a while. #PGA — Barrett Jones (@BarrettAJones) August 10, 2014
Mickelson was looking in trouble on the 12th, but he pulls out some magic to par, and the crowd erupts in appreciation. What a save!
So, as Fowler sinks a simple putt on the 12th for par, McIlroy watches on from the tee. That Mickelson putt was unbelievable. Gets better every time you see it. 30 feet! McIlroy hits a beauty off the tee to let the pair know he is breathing down their necks.
If you haven't been watching the TV coverage, you've only missed the fans yelling this about 8,697 times.
null
McIlroy almost ties the lead, but pushes his putt wide as Fowler chips safely over the water onto the island green. Mickelson follows, and places about eight feet closer to the flag. Another pressure finish for the pair on the 12th.
Fowler misses the birdie putt, and pars for -15! Mickelson has a simpler task - 12 feet, but pretty true, but he misses badly and will also par. There is no separating these two. null
Now McIlroy attacks the green with his third shot, and will have an eight foot putt to tie the lead and punish Mickelson and Fowler for leavng that shot on the carpet. Stenson starting to wobble.
WAIT! Isn't tonight the #Supermoon !?!!Play through #PGAChampionship Let's Get a Champion (or a Werewolf) tonight! #NaturesFloodlight #PGA — Brett Milan Gajda (@BrettGajda) August 10, 2014
Rickie Fowler gets a drop from the puddle. The ground is a mess, so he gets a decent drop on the edge of the course. It's a tough ask.
Phil Mickelson is 44. He's in a 3-way tie atop leaderboard with 25-year-olds Fowler & McIlory in Final-Round of a Major. Just terrific. #PGA — Ben Raby (@BenRaby31) August 10, 2014
Fowler is taking his time here as he attempts to recover from the edge of the cart path. McIlroy is again left watching at waiting at the tee. Plenty of time for the Northern Irishman to get himself under control.
Fowler gets on the green, but it's heavy, and he'll go again from distance. Mickelson and McIlroy are both watching with interest.
Mickelson misses his uphill birdie attempt, and pars the 14th to remain at 15 under. Here comes Fowler to save.
Fowler takes two to get to the hole, and drops back! That leaves McIlroy and Mickelson on top at -15. The Northen Irishman will tee off on the same hole with a five iron.
-15 Phil Mickelson
-15 Rory McIlroy
-14 Rickie Fowler
-14 Henrik Stenson
-12 Jim Furyk
-10 Jason Day
-8 Adam Scott
The delay at the PGA Championship really monkeyed up my nap schedule today. — Mac Craig (@RobertMCraig) August 10, 2014
Scott -8 on final hole. @JDayGolf stagnant on -10. Not their day, today. — Mark Hayes (@HayesyHeraldSun) August 10, 2014
McIlroy goes close with a long birdie attempt on the 14th, but it's a yard short, and will leave him putting for a straightforward par.
Mickelson hits a safe tee shot on the 15th, while the hurting Fowler follows suit, about five feet further away from the flag. Meanwhile, Stenson sends a putt three feet short on the 16th to remain one off the lead on -14.
Fantastic stuff at the PGA, all day long. Great stories everywhere. Tiger not missed AT ALL. Nor will he be, as the years go on. — Bruce Jenkins (@Bruce_Jenkins1) August 10, 2014
McIlroy pars the 14 to remain one off the pace, and tees off on the 15th. He has been flawless on this hole all week with three birdies.
Mickelson and Fowler are both disappointed to par the 15th hole, as the top four remain tight. We are in for some finish here folks. Chance for Mcilroy to break away here.
-15 Mickelson
-15 Mcilroy
-14 Fowler
-14 Stenson
can we all take a moment to appreciate how the guys in the PGA Championship dress — olivia still (@livvie_4) August 10, 2014
McIlroy takes his time on this one. It's a loong attempt. Maybe 17 feet. Mickelson is sitting in the rough one hole ahead. Big moment.
He's left it short, as Rickie Fowler comes into the frame looking for his ball behind the Northern Irishman. Fowler heads down the 15th fairway in search of his ball. McIlroy pars the 15th to stay on -15, tied for the lead with Phil Mickelson.
Showdown between the two most popular guys in golf (not named Tiger) for the PGA championship. Tied three left, this is awesome. — Lance Kalbacher (@LanceK13) August 10, 2014
So, Rickie Fowler needs a miracle shot here to stay in the hunt after mishitting his drive badly off course on the 16th. Miracle may be an understatement. Here he goes.
when i go golf i usually get asked if people can play through me.. think Rory needs to ask Fowler that very question. #PGA — Reece Fats (@photofatuhi) August 10, 2014
So, the light is fading here in Kentucky, with just under three regulation holes to go.
Rickie Fowler lets one go, and it's on the green! What a connection - the crowd is baying. He hooks it over the trees, and ends up giving himself a chance.
Mickelson needs to go over a bunker here on the 16th. He chips over, and catches the lip of the hole on the third bounce! So much drama here as Mickelson lines up for par.
-15 Mickelson
-15 McIlroy
-14 Fowler
- 14 Stenson
Adam Scott finishes on a 2-under 69 to tie in 16th place at 9-under overall score.
Mickelson drops one on the 16th to give McIlroy the overall lead. Fowler has clawed his way back after a horrible tee shot, and pars to stay one off the pace. So, that shakes things up a bit! Mickelson will be kicking himself.
-15 McIlroy
-14 Mickelson
-14 Fowler
- 14 Stenson
Henrik Stenson hits an unbelievable shot to par, and stay one off the lead - stranger things have happened!
What a freakin' unbelievable day of golf at the PGA! Fowler hooking it over the trees and landing on the green. Nuts! — carrie williamson (@cawilliamson) August 11, 2014
McIlroy lines up a putt from medium distance on the 16th for a two shot lead. It goes left, but McIlroy pars to hold at -15. It'll be a race against the sun now as darkness closes in. We should finish the round - but there is always the possibility of Monday play if there is a tie in the clubhouse.
Phenomenal mental strength from Rory, waiting 5mins before every shot and having to follow a home crowd cheering as players overtake him #pga — Si (@CityFella_) August 11, 2014
Here comes McIlroy on the 16th. His tee shot hangs left, and ends up plum in the bunker. It's a biggun though, and the sand is soggy so it shouldn't pose too many problems. Stenson has just made life hard for himself, and may drop away finally at the close.
That's a beauty from Mickelson, who chips onto the green on the 17th off the downslope. Rickie Fowler has a long putt to birdie here on the 17th. It's not even close, that's a shocker. Possibly light affected there - he didn't read that at all. That could cause trouble for McIlroy, who will be finishing in the dusk.
Fowler sinks for par, and Mickelson follows suit. One hole to go, with the pair tied one off the lead at 14 under.
So, McIlroy is on the 17th, with Mickelson and Fowler on the final hole. It lokos like the Northen Irishman is going to continue his streak here, but the light could cause him something of a headache on the final stretch.
-15 McIlroy
-14 Mickelson
-14 Fowler
-14 Stenson
Stenson has a brave attempt to chip in for a birdie on the 18th, but it has gone long. He putts for a birdie, and ends on -14.
And that should be the purse! McIlroy birdies on the 17th to take a two shot lead into the final hole.
This PGA golf tournament is unbelievable viewing, absolutely awesome. Punching the air myself & saying come on every time there is a birdy ! — Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) August 10, 2014
That extra shot in hand should give McIlroy the cushion he needs to take this one home. What a round.
A foursome on 18 on the last day of a major. What a finish! #PGA — Mark Griffith (@MarkGriffithATL) August 11, 2014
Amazing scenes here as we have a four ball on the 18th hole! McIlroy drives, and just misses the water on the left! A little close for comfort!
The sportsmanship in the PGA today with the group playing up 18 as 4 is pretty respectable so no one has to play tomorrow, hopefully. — Mike Carney (@mike_carney) August 11, 2014
Final hole standings:
-16 McIlroy
-14 Mickelson
-14 Fowler
-14 Stenson
The players are jogging between shots here as the light fades by the minute. Barring a disaster on the easiest hole, McIlroy is about to cement his dominance in the modern game with his third major on the trot.
Boy if Rory chunks this because he can't see the ball at his own feet, that would be bad for the PGA. — Matt Gajtka (@MattGajtka) August 11, 2014
Oof. McIlroy finds a tiny bunker on the 18th. That extra shot could be significant now. We may be on for a tight finish after all! It's pretty dark now, and the sky is rumbling.
Mickelson hits an incredible chip as he attempts to the tie the lead. It is agonisingly close, but he ends on -15. Huge round from the southpaw. Final round 66.
As it stands
-15 McIlroy
-14 Mickelson
-14 Fowler
-14 Stenson
Rickie Fowler tries a similar ballsy effort, but it races by. He fluffs again, and ends on -14.
So, here's McIlroy from the bunker. He is the last one in play. He will have to two-putt in the dark to win it.
You can't let the desire to accommodate national TV distort the competition of a major golf championship. #PGA Championship — Chuck Wilson (@ChuckWilsonPOV) August 11, 2014
No sign of McIlroy calling it for the day. It is so dark out there it is unbelievable. He has every right to do so.
And here we go. McIlroy sends it about a yard short to set himself up for the win!
Rory McIlroy continues his charge to greatness with a one-shot victory to end 16 under with a final hole par. He edges Phil Mickelson by a shot, and wins the PGA Championship for the second time. That's his fourth major!
WHAT A WIN. After a very wobbly start from the Northern Irishman, he came flying back with a phenomenal shot on the tenth hole to eagle. After that, Mickelson and Fowler stumbled as the babyfaced assassin closed the deal. His back nine was flawless.
So, to put this in perspective, at 25 years and 3 months, McIlroy is now the third youngest player to have won four majors, just behind Jack Nicklaus and a little further behind Tiger Woods. What a season.
Rory McIlroy -16
Phil Mickelson -15
Rickie Fowler -14
Henrik Stenson -14
Jim Furyk -12
Ryan Palmer -12
Jason Day - 9
Adam Scott - 9

Shocker from Rickie Fowler, who pulls it deep into a muddy puddle to the right of the green. The officials will take a look.
