Professional golfer and tournament director Ben Roberts is spearheading the push for the first annual SJD Foundation Charity Day.
Roberts hopes a field of 120 will grace Mount Xavier on Sunday, October 5, to pay tribute to Dorney, who had been battling an aggressive form of stomach cancer for the past 20 months and died this month.
"We're hoping to raise some good money because it's a terrific charity that does great things for families and children in times of need," Roberts said.
"My wife's brother-in-law is Shane Dorney and over the last few months we've been talking about raising money for his foundation."
However, the Ballarat Golf City professional said there was still plenty of work to be done in the lead-up to the first edition of what he hopes will become an annual tournament.
"We're looking for sponsors, donations and auction items for the day and obviously teams to play," he said.
"If the whole day could raise between $5000 to $10,000, that would be fantastic.
"It's a great way to pay tribute to what Shane's done and we hope Mount Xavier is a very supportive golf club to run the event each year from now on."
Roberts plans to run both the Pro-Am and SJD events next year.
