Over three-quarters of Australians support such unions and a passing of the bill would align our politicians with the current thinking of a majority of the country on this matter.
It should be the fundamental right of any Australian adult to marry the person they love, irrespective of sexuality. Currently, approximately 10 per cent of Australia's adult population is denied this right.
Despite misconceptions and flawed thinking, sexual orientation is not a conscious decision or a 'lifestyle choice'. It is no more chosen than gender identity, appearance, disability, mental illness or race.
We are in the enlightened 21st century, not like the bigotry of previous decades.
Why is the idea of same-sex marriage still such a sticking point with today's politicians who are supposed to represent the views of their constituents?
Marriage in Australia should simply be a commitment entered into voluntarily between two consenting, non-related adults.
