Over 50 Phoenix P-12 VCAL students helped the Anzac centenary commemoration effort by putting poppies on each of the plaques along the road.
Teacher Drew Layton said it was a good way for the students to contribute.
“It’s not just about the 100 years, it’s about the importance of Anzac Day to the community,” he said.
“This is a way to give back.”
Mr Layton said even though the school had come aboard almost accidently – through an overheard conversation at the Olive Grove – he was proud the VCAL kids could take part.
“Our principal overheard the conversation and said ‘we have the perfect group for you’ (to do this), and it’s worked out well,” he said.
Each plaque along the avenue had a poppy tied around it and they will stay there until Remembrance Day, organiser Chris Rigg said.
The year 11 and 12 students were helped by the Lions Club, who provided protection cars as they made their way along the avenue in the service lanes, and the Ballarat Highway Patrol who were on site to make sure everything ran smoothly.
The mammoth task will be finished by Ballarat Specialist School students on Tuesday.
