Former University of Ballarat vice chancellor Professor David James has become the highest profile candidate to announce his intentions to win a seat on the City of Ballarat council.

In doing so, Prof James became the fourth person to put his hand up for the Alfredton Ward, following professional fire fighter Wayne Rigg, former Morwell councillor Martin Hill and community activist and CHACC chairman Eugene Kneebone.
The announcement caps off what has been a chaotic time for Prof James who ended his reign at the University of Ballarat in 2000.
Since then he has continued to live in Alfredton while taking up a position on the board of fledgling Ballarat IT company Neighborhood Cable.
Last week, the father of four received another high accolade when he was appointed as an officer of the Order of Australia (AO) as part of the Australia Day awards.
Prof James moved to Ballarat in 1994 and has since been a member of more than 20 community groups and organisations.
