Avoca Police Sergeant Peter McCormick said police were called to the scene about 7.15pm after a car hit a kangaroo.
He said a second car then hit the same kangaroo before a third car and the second car collided.
There were two people in each of the vehicles which were travelling towards Ballarat.
The SES was sent to the scene to attend to a man trapped in the second vehicle, but ambulance paramedics, assisted by truck drivers, had freed the man before the SES arrived, Sgt McCormick said.
Rural Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the 29-year-old man was taken to Ballarat Health Services _ Base Hospital with minor injuries.
Sgt McCormick said the accident was one of a number of recent incidents involving kangaroos.
He warned drivers to take heed of the kangaroo warning signs.
Meanwhile, the Central Goldfields Shire Traffic Management Unit has appealed to the driver of a white stationwagon with a trailer carrying a load of sheep on the Sunraysia Hwy to come forward, or for anyone with information about this vehicle to contact Acting Sergeant Mark Bowker on 53361306.
