Ballarat police were called to the address, in the vicinity of Albert Street, about 9.30pm.
A man and a woman were sitting in the lounge room when they heard a loud bang from the garage.
When they inspected the scene, they found a bullet had pierced through their garage door and shattered the rear window of a parked car.
Police located a bullet at the scene, but did not have any further information about the type of bullet.
Criminal Investigation Unit officers and ballistics experts were called to investigate the incident on Sunday morning.
As of Sunday afternoon, nobody had been arrested or charged in relation to the incident.
Police said the investigation was ongoing.
The incident comes a fortnight after Albert Street in Sebastopol was named the worst street for crime in Ballarat.
The number of criminal offences recorded on the stretch of road increased from 199 to 243 between 2012 and 2014, up by 22 per cent.
Ballarat Police Inspector Bruce Thomas said at the time the data was released Albert Street was busy for both cars and people.
“It is also quite a long street and you would expect it to have more crime proportionate to its size as compared to smaller, less busy streets,” he said.
Crime Statistics Agency data released in June found the overall crime rate had decreased in Ballarat.
