Thirteen local restaurateurs and chefs have put their hands up to feed the masses this year and for anyone with even the slightest interest in food, it’s expected to exceed all expectations.
Organisers have predicted more than 1000 people will attend the two-day event, with chefs prepared to have food at the ready as soon as the doors open at 5pm on Friday night.
Promising a bigger event than last year’s inaugural market, The Courier’s Kristy Bye said Ballarat’s food-lovers were in for a treat.
“We’ve looked at what we did last year and advanced on that. We’re catering for everyone,” she said.
“It’s better this year because it’s going over two days and we’ve made it bigger and more vibrant to fit in with that market atmosphere.
“It’s created to be a loud, vibrant and exciting atmosphere … think night markets of Geelong and Melbourne.”
The Family Hawkers Market will kick off this year’s month of foodie events across Ballarat beginning on October 30 between 5-10pm at the Ballarat Mining Exchange, with a second market held on the following day between 10am-3pm.
Local restaurateurs and chefs including Freight Bar, Rebellion Brewery, Billy’s Bistro, Zaragosa, Mitchell Harris Wines, Ballarat Steakhouse, Fu Man Lou, Round The Way, Sovereign Hill, Catfish Thai, Asahi, The Forge Pizzeria and Kitteltys will be attending the two day event.
Local chef Sara Kittelty said she will spend Friday baking and preparing “cakes, cakes and more cakes” for the first night of the market.
Looking forward to her second market, Ms Kittelty said the event was a perfect chance for foodies to taste what local cafes and restaurants had to offer.
“It’s great fun … it kick starts Good Food month and showcases people what events will be like,” Ms Kittlety said.
Chef Dona of Billy's Bistro and Bar will be attending the event for the first time and looks forward to sharing his Italian paninis with Ballarat.
