The scheme, which launched on January 1, promises a 50 per cent discount on the vehicle registration fee and Transport Accident Charge for those eligible – meaning apprentices in regional Victoria could save $330.20.
Many trade apprentices are among those eligible if their employer can verify that the use of their vehicle is essential to their work.
Apprentice bricklayer Kurt Tresize said the initiative will help those who are pressed financially.
“It will be good as apprentice wages aren’t very high and rego’s are very expensive,” he said.
“We used to get a tool bonus any year but we don’t even get that any more, which means you have to pay for all your tools out of your wages, which makes things harder as well.”
