Creswick’s Jane Varney got quite the shock last week when she went to check on the handywork of her six chickens, only to find a whopping 110-gram egg.
The lone egg was about twice the size of her normal eggs, which usually clock in at about 55g.
So let’s just put this in perspective for a second: the Australian Egg Corporation says an extra-large egg is between 58.3g-66.6g, a jumbo size is 66.7-70g and a king-size 70g-80g.
Then you have your Creswick-sized special – a 110g whopper laid by three-year-old hen Blue Bell.
Mrs Varney said she couldn’t believe her eyes when she first spotted it.
“My first thought was ‘geez, she must have a sore bum’,” she said.
“We had to make sure a goose hadn’t snuck in and laid an egg.”
So what to do with it now?
Well, there are certain plans in the pipeline.
“I might boil it up and dip toast soldiers in it,” Mrs Varney said.
“We might need a whole loaf though.”
