And it’s not just hobby sailors getting out there, with students from the Ballarat Specialist School also taking to the water.
It’s part of a program called Sailability, run by volunteers at the Ballaarat Yacht Club.
Specialist school teacher Karen Dehne-Simpson said it was great to see the LEAP program students sailing.
“It’s great for their self esteem and mobility,” she said.
“It gives them that sense of freedom out on the lake.”
Mike Blythe from the club said they saw more confidence after the sessions from any young people they took out on the water, be it the specialist school or primary school groups.
The yacht club’s major fundraiser for the year is on Sunday. Details in the listings on page 18.
