Bailey Tuddenham walked a gruelling nine and a half hours from Lake Daylesford to Lake Wendouree on Sunday in 36-degree heat, to help raise money for children affected by traumatic burn injuries.
In November last year, Bailey went to Queensland to watch his mum, aunties, uncles and grandparents compete in the Noosa Triathlon, which was raising money for the KIDS Foundation.
During the event, Bailey met four young people, all affected by burns, who had attended to thank the competitors.
He was moved by the courage of the young people he met, and it was then Bailey decided he wanted to help and raise money to help send the children on an annual KIDS Foundation camp.
With the help of his parents, he organised everything himself including the course, start place, support crew and fundraising page.
Making the journey wasn’t easy, and at times Bailey wanted to give up.
“At the 30km mark I started getting really sore,” he said.
However, he said he’d do it again in a heartbeat, having already raised nearly $3000 through his Everyday Heroes donation page.
Bailey completed the entire 43km by himself and was joined by his family and friends, who all took turns in completing sections of the walk along with him.
His mum Emma Tuddenham said Bailey had chosen to finish off at Lake Wendouree as he was a big fan of the Lake View Hotel and was looking forward to finishing up with soft drinks and hot chips.
She said she was impressed by the efforts of her tireless son.
“His feet were hurting and his toenail was digging in,” she said.
Amazingly, completing a marathon isn’t out of character for Bailey. Only a fortnight ago he completed a 50km bike ride in the Ballarat Cycle Classic, raising money for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
