The state government has announced an order for five new X’Trapolis trains through a $105.2 million commitment in the 2015-16 budget.
The new order comes on the back of a previous order of five X’Trapolis trains for the metropolitan network last year.
The high demand for rolling stock will support Ballarat jobs and create space for 5,000 extra passengers across Melbourne’s metropolitan network.
Labor has also ordered 65 high capacity trains, for which the tender process is still ongoing, with Alstom one of the shortlisted manufacturers.
“These new trains will not only create space for thousands of extra passengers in Melbourne, they’ll support hundreds of jobs here in Ballarat,” Wendouree MP Sharon Knight said.
An Alstom spokesperson said they were “delighted” to secure the contract for the new X’Trapolis trains.
