The viaduct, which runs over the Melton reservoir, is frequented by Ballarat trains to and from Melbourne.
The defect was identified on Monday, May 30.
A V/Line official confirmed that a 15km/h speed limit has been enforced over a 400-metre section of track while crews work to repair the fault, but did not give specifics into the defect.
“Work to rectify the fault is expected to be complete by tomorrow (Thursday) morning, and the speed restriction will be lifted,” the spokesperson said.
“Some services on the Ballarat line today (Wednesday) will be replaced by coaches for part of the journey, and some for the entire journey.
“Trains are expected to return to normal running by tomorrow morning, Thursday June 2.”
V/Line has released a list of timetable changes for the Ballarat line on June 1.
