A man was followed, assaulted and mugged in a random attack this morning, police say.
Ballarat Criminal Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for any information after a man was injured when he was assaulted with a tyre iron.
Police believe a 22-year-old Wendouree man was walking along Peel Street in Soldiers Hill when he noticed a silver car following him at 3.20am on Monday morning.
Police media officer Kelly Grindley said the occupants of the car yelled at the man, who then ran north along Peel Street.
“It is believed one of the occupants in the car, a man aged in his early 20s, got out of the vehicle and assaulted the victim with what appeared to be a tyre iron,” Ms Grindley said.
He demanded the 22-year-old victim’s mobile phone and wallet.
The man fled the scene, with the phone and wallet, in a silver vehicle last seen travelling on Rowe Street.
The victim suffered minor injuries.
Police are searching for the alleged offender who is approximately 180 centimetres tall. It is not known if there were other people in the car at the time of the assault.
