A BALLARAT woman is warning residents not to be fooled by a highly sophisticated malware attack that draws people in through fake news reports claiming there has been a massacre in Ballarat.
Michelle Mahoney got the fright of her life when her son Joshua, who lives with his family in Sweden, called her multiple times to find out if she was ok.
Mr Mahoney had seen multiple reports on Facebook of a deadly terror attack in Ballarat and clicked on a link. The link took him to a CNN“news site”.
The article stated a number of people were dead in Ballarat and quoted Victoria Police spokespeople.
Ms Mahoney said the experience was frightening and warned anyone from clicking on the faux-articles that contained viruses.
