Combine maths with biodiversity and what do you get?
A Ballarat Grammar School victory in the University of Melbourne Maths in Technology “Real World” competition.
The four member team of Jonathan Yates, Ben Butler, Christopher Milne and Lachlan Staines took out the win against 50 other teams, including from University High School, Melbourne High School, Wesley College and the John Monash Science School.
Ballarat Grammar specialist maths teacher Sue Garner said they entered two teams in the competition.
“This is a significant result for Ballarat Grammar students who have won this prestigious award for the second time in four years,” Ms Garner said.
She said the teams were given two and a half hours to work on biodiversity data, with the five finalists giving a five minute talk presenting their solution to six linked questions using calculus, optimisation and probability.
The four students will each receive $200 which will be presented at a school assembly on Monday, August 1.
