Food is Free Laneway founder Lou Ridsdale said the heritage apple tree, won in the City of Ballarat’s National Neighbour Day competition, would round out the community garden’s offerings.
“It just means that we can provide the community and our direct neighbourhood with amazing fruit and given that we have a lot of fruit given in harvest season we’d like to provide some ourselves over the fence.”
A Jonathon apple tree, also won through council, will be the centrepiece of a shared garden in central Ballarat.
Residents of the apartment block cleared out an unfinished bed left by the building’s developer to make a community garden.
“We have a really tight group of us who live together and we thought it would be nice to have something we all contribute to,” resident Renee Debono said.
