It was Young’s first major tournament victory and he brought his best pool to the big moments throughout the competition. The 22-year-old felt he didn’t his best pool throughout the tournament but lifted in the crucial stages.
“I think I know how to get over the line now, I know how to win. I definitely wasn’t playing my best,” Young said.
“There were patches I played really well. The crunch balls that I needed to pot (I did), I think that helped me get over the line.”
Young won seven consecutive matches to clinch the title in the 128-player draw. His biggest scalp came in the quarter-final stage where he beat Australian number one James Delahunty 4-3. He came up against his close friend Peter Butterworth in the final and rose to the occasion to win 4-1.
“I just tried to use all the experience I had, because I’ve been knocking on the door for the last few years. I just tried to compose myself.”
