Bungaree and Buninyong might be fierce rivals for this year’s Central Highlands Football League premiership. But this Saturday, they will put that aside to raise awareness of suicide prevention.
Organised by Survivors of Suicide founder Kristy Steenhuis, the inaugural Stomp Out The Stigma Cup aims to start a conversation around suicide prevention.
Bungaree coach Heath Pyke said the suicide issue was more far reaching than any football game. “We’ve had people who’ve been through it or who’ve had a connection to it in some way,” Mr Pyke said.
“And being in a club is much more than just winning a game of football or netball.”
Buninyong co-coach Jarrod Morgan agreed it was a great opportunity to get people talking about mental health. “They are players as people before they are footy players,” he said.
The cup is sponsored by MyPsyDiary creator Dr Amanda Commons-Treloar, Bendigo Bank and Body and Soul Fitness Gym.
