An exhibition currently being held in Ballarat’s CBD entitled Golden City has called on artists to research paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, writings and objects relating to gold mining in Ballarat and create a contemporary response.
More than 30 artists applied, with three commissioned to create a new work for Gekko Systems’ collection.
The successful artists were Ash Keating and local indigenous artists Marlene Gilson and Josh Muir, with the exhibition curated by Julie Collins, who is currently in preparation stage for 2018’s large-scale Biennale of Australian Art.
The works respond to an era when gold was discovered in Ballarat, with news spreading wide and prospectors arriving en-masse to make their fortune.
The exhibition will be launched this Thursday and be held until August 28 at Mitchell Harris Wine Bar.
