Cameron Merrett pleaded guilty to a single charge of possessing dimethandrostanolone, alternatively known as anabolic steroids, at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Monday.
The court heard a large zip-lock bag containing 11 blue heart-shaped pills were found in Merrett’s car on September 21 of last year in Melbourne.
Merrett told police the pills were put in the car by a friend and he forgot they were there.
His lawyer, David Taminika, submitted his client had no ongoing issues with drugs and there was nothing else found in the car that suggested the drugs were being sold.
He said the steroid was marketed as ‘fast acting’ and required daily usage, telling the court the 11 pills were a low number.
Mr Taminika said his client had ‘no real knowledge’ of the side effects, but was not addicted and therefore no therapeutic sentence was necessary.
He submitted a fine would act as a general and specific deterrent.
Magistrate Mark Stratmann fined Merrett $850.
