Sebastopol Vikings wiped away the disappointment of last year’s grand final defeat with victory in the Ballarat and District Soccer Association open division one playoff match on Saturday night.
The Vikings, which went down to Forest Rangers in a dramatic penalty shootout in 2015, beat Ballarat 4-2 at Morshead Park.
It took two goals in extra time to win the match after scores were tied 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.
Ballarat twice clawed its way back from a Vikings lead, but could not hold out the Sebastopol boys, which found the net in the 113th minute through Justin Robson and again in the 120th minute when Kuanyjal Tuany completed his hat-trick.
In the women’s division one encounter, Warrnambool also bounced back from last year’s grand final defeat to beat North United 2-1.
Extra time was also needed to split the teams, with Emily Whelan scoring the winner to complete her brace.
