The Ballarat export, who was delisted from North Melbourne at the end of the 2016 season, has flagged an interest to join the West Coast Eagles for next year.
However, Petrie doesn't expect to know his future for another few weeks.
The Eagles are considering purchasing Petrie as a replacement for injured ruckman Nic Naitanui, who will miss at least the majority of the 2017 AFL season after surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
Naitanui suffered the injury in the round 22 win over Hawthorn.
Petrie believes he would be up to the task if required.
"They haven't given me any guarantees," he told SEN Breakfast.
"They've scoped out my level of interest, and I think they've got a few other players that they've got their eye (on).
"I think it's going to be a few weeks before they give me any guarantees or certainties but I'm feeling okay at the moment."
Petrie kicked a total of 428 goals in 316 games for the Kangaroos between 2001 and 2016.

He was released from the club alongside fellow veterans Brent Harvey, Nick Dal Santo and Michael Firrito in August.
Petrie indicated the Kangaroos would forever remain close to his heart, even if he didn't remain close to theirs.
"I'll bleed and blue and white," he said.
"But the club was great, they took me off the website about three minutes after I got the flick. They've been quick to take all those things."
Petrie’s long and successful career at North Melbourne began after he was drafted from the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 23 in 2000.
Before that, he grew up playing with the Ballarat Swans in the Ballarat Football League.
Among his achievements at the highest level of the game is five goal-kicking awards at the Kangaroos and a place in the All-Australian team of 2011, where he was named on the interchange bench.
Petrie reached his 300-game milestone in May this year, where he became the first player to reach the mark having grown up playing all his junior football in the city.
The key position tall will turn 34 later this month.
