Ballarat Sebastopol BMX Club held a special meet on Friday to raise funds for Olympian Sam Willoughby, after he was injured in a serious crash while training in America last month.
The crash left him without feeling below his chest.
Danielle Pompe, one of the organisers, said many riders at the club, young and old, idolised Willoughby.
“What I’ve learnt from being in the BMX community is that we’re one big family and when something happens to one of our fellow riders we all band together,” she said. “We’re only a small club but this is our contribution – we want to help and show our support for him.”
The event included races from mini wheelers to more experienced riders, with all proceeds donated to Sam Willoughby’s Road 2 Recovery fund to help with his rehabilitation.
