But this week seven Federation College VET students put their soap where their mouths are.
The community service students have spent the past two months on a project to get donated hygiene goods for Ballarat’s new One Humanity Shower Bus.
Student Nadia Greenwood said they learnt about the bus from teacher Lisa van Hamond and wanted to help out.
“The school has been helping to build the bus which will have showers and washing machines so people can get clean and wash their clothes,” Nadia said.
“So we wanted to help donate toiletries.”
The students – working independently of their teachers – decorated a large box and put it in the foyer of the Grant Street college, while also advertising it through a Facebook page and school newsletters.
“People from the community have come in and donated bags of goods,” Ms van Hamond said.
“This is an incredible group of kids. They are a privilege to teach and to know. And they are all keen to work in a community setting.”
Shower Bus coordinator Constantine Osuchukwu thanked the students for their “generosity and kindness in providing the toiletries”.
“We are very proud of what you have done and commend you for your fantastic effort,” Mr Osuchukwu said.
“The goodness and generosity of the whole Ballarat community has made it possible for us to bring this Shower Bus project to completion.”
Final works on the bus are now being completed before roadworthy tests are carried out. It is expected the bus will be operational this month.
