Ballarat City Brewers have fallen agonisingly close to knocking off 2016-17 summer baseball league division 2 ladder leader Werribee.
The Brewers led until the latter stages of the contest before a four-run eighth innings from the Giants handed them the lead and ultimately secured the 11-10 victory.
In what was a low-scoring affair early, just three runs were scored in the first six innings. Seven runs from Ballarat's next two innings saw it take a two-run lead into the sixth and hold that until the top of the eighth.
The two sides entered the final innings all square, but Werribee produced one run and held the home side to none in the ninth innings to silence a gallant Brewers outfit. The demoralising loss follows Ballarat City’s 8-9 loss to Werribee in round 8. It will now look to bury its disappointment and account for Port Melbourne on Tuesday.
Rob Shaw was superb, delivering three hits including a home run. He was well-supported by Jedd Miller (Two hits and two runs batted in) and Leigh Ashmore (two and one).
