Eighteen Warrenheip motel apartments are being converted into affordable student accommodation.
Comprising of 40 beds, the 18 self-contained apartments are connected to the NBN and include study areas, on-site car parking and a tennis court.
They are also close to Federation University but can be used by any students looking for a low-cost accommodation option.
Buninyong MP Geoff Howard said he was pleased to see the former apartments get a new lease of life.
“Everybody should have a right to live in safe, secure and affordable housing,” Mr Howard said.
“Putting a roof over someone’s head is one of the most important ways you can provide them with the opportunity to unlock their potential.
“That’s why the Andrews Labor government is delivering targeted high-quality housing to the people that need it most.”
Regional Development Victoria has funded $540,000 towards the apartments’ refurbishment under the National Rental Affordability Scheme.
The NRAS scheme, which began in 2008, provides annual financial incentives for up to 10 years to provide affordable rental housing at least 20 per cent below market rates.
The rent for a two bedroom Warrenheip unit will be $208 per week and a three bedroom unit $220 per week.
Weekly rent amount includes accommodation and all utilities, such as power, water, gas and NBN.
“I’d like to congratulate (Ballarat’s) the Elmstone Group for their fantastic work transforming these apartments with the project being delivered under the National Rental Affordability Scheme.”
Elmstone Group portfolio manager Imogen Corliss said it was important to deliver housing that would change outcomes for young people.
“It’s fantastic to be involved in such a great project that will help to transform the lives of those that will live here,” Ms Corliss said.
“With security and comfort at home, these students will be able to focus on their studies and their future.”
The units are located close to the rear of the Ballarat Colonial Motor Inn on the Western Highway but are not a part of that complex.
