The developers behind the controversial relocation of the saleyards, RLX Investment Company Pty Ltd, have backed the idea.
RLX managing director Garry Edwards said he hoped the idea would attract interest from stakeholders and residents across the community. He also said he was keen to brief the newly established community committee about the $23 million project.
“Given the planning process for CVLX had been protracted but is now complete, we’re looking forward to updating the community on the CVLX project and in turn, listening to and questions or matters they may have,” he said.
“I’m hopeful a number of local residents and groups, as well as site users, will volunteer to join the committee.”
However, Committee for Miners Rest spokesman Werner Oellering said it was a case of “too little, too late.”
“They (RLX) sent out a flyer out and it was mentioned in there, but they seem to be ignoring the fact there is two Victorian Civil Action Tribunal (VCAT)cases against the development still going,” he said.“No resolution has been met for these cases but the developers are already acting as though it is going ahead. As residents we will continue to fight to make sure this thing isn’t seen, heard or smelt in Miners Rest.”
Mr Edwards said he hoped about 100 Ballarat region workers will be engaged in the project during its construction phase.
“Our approach will be to support the local Ballarat economy where possible,” he said.
It is anticipated the first sod will be turned at the site early next year.
