Seeing homeless people on the streets of Melbourne during a recent family visit was enough to compel 11-year-old James Dawes into action in Ballarat.

“After seeing the homeless on the streets, I thought about Christmas and how (homeless) people would probably get nothing. So I wanted to make a difference,” the young Haddon boy said.
He said with many toy drives already being organised for needy children, he wanted to do something to help women who are struggling.
So he designed fliers and lobbied businesses to fill pamper hampers, or toiletry bags filled with goods like toothpaste, toothbrushes, body wash, soaps, hairbrushes, chocolates and pizza and coffee vouchers.
James has so far made 12 hampers, but hopes to donate at least 20, which will be distributed through the Ballarat Soup Bus.
He has collected $200 to buy goods for the toiletry bags and has set up a gofundme page called Hampers for the Homeless where people can donate. Phone Emma Dawes on 0402 945069.
