A man who nearly drowned Lerderderg Gorge near Bacchus Marsh has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the man in his 30s had jumped feet first into the gorge and became unconscious.
He was pulled from the water by bystanders and paramedics were called. An air ambulance attended but the man’s condition was too unstable so he was transported by road.
The incident comes as Ambulance Victoria State Health Commander Paul Holman said people should look after themselves, their neighbours and those aged over 65.
“Up until two o'clock this afternoon paramedics had been called to seven heat exposure cases across the state,' Mr Holman said.
“One case involved a man who became unwell after playing golf in the heat.
“It's important that people respect the heat, avoid the heat of the day, and try to keep themselves cool.
“They should also drink more water, unless their doctor has restricted fluid intake.
“As people head to the water to cool off - paramedics want them to stay safe."

'We've already had two cases where people have been seriously injured in water accidents today. Both required air ambulance helicopters to attend,' Mr Holman said.
